Hello, I have been trying for two weeks to get decent growth. I have grown barley, winter wheat, summer wheat, oats, and millet.. All failed in one way shape or form. The root mat was good on the barley but shoots were sporadic and only 3" by day 7. White mold has also hit everything. I believe the drainage was not adequate and have since drilled more holes in the 1020 trays. I also think it was too warm in the house 70-75 ind in a window that gets full sun. I moved the small green house to the mud room that stays between 50-65 degrees and there has not been any mold but the growth is incredibly slow! I have a tray of barley that will be 6 days old tomorrow and has a sporadic 1" or less growth on the shoots.. Am I missing something here? I have been religious with keeping track of what I've been trying with a spread sheet and taking pictures etc. I've rinsed with bleach and apple cider vinegar and always soaked for 12hrs or less then straight to trays. Have not tried to put another tray on top but can that make that much difference? Any advise will be appreciate. My seeds came from feed stores and are all supposed to be sprout able. The jury is still out on the oats and millet but the wheat and barley do sprout just poorly. Is it something I'm doing or maybe the seeds?
Thank you!

If you can post pictures that would be a great help. 70-75 is the optimum temperature I just wonder if by being inside in a greenhouse and in full sun you didn't raise the humidity level thus causing mold. In the house in full sun or no sun at 70-75 should have been great.
Also try reducing yourr water time to thirry minutes every 10 hours. Then adjust up or down as needed.
The lower the temperature the slower the germination you may want to do an overnite soak then drain, then rinse and drain every 12 hours for the first couple of days then place in the trays since you have placed them in a cooler room.

Good Morning!!!!! Well it's Monday. This weekend was to crazy. Never got to the sprouting. I just finished washing out 4 cups of wheat again. I'll let it sit till 9:30 pm and wash again. Then I'll drain and keep it in the bucket without the water right. Then after 12 hours again I wash and let sit one more day? Then spread out on tray before going to bed. If this don't work I'll send my address to ya. Your so sweet in trying to help me here. I won't give up yet!!!!!!!!! Thanks !!!!!!!!!! I'll be back!!!!!!! Mare

I would start over inside. The trays need drainage holes about two inches apart across the entire bottom of your tray message me you email and I can send a picture if needed. Once inside soak overnight in water with a couple cap fulls of bleach added. No greenhouse and no tops on the trays this will raise humidity. Completely soak with water twice a day try twelve hours apart. Also message me your address and I can send a barley sample that I know sprouts well. Don't give up once you get the hang of it it will pay for itself and get easier

Ok, Thank you. I have added holes and restarted inside. Also adding bleach to my soak and will water as recommended. Should I only water those 2x a day? Or will I need to spritz a 3rd time?
When I go back through my notes the trays I used bleach on were the best spouters. When I switched to ACV I had little to no growth. Maybe better drainage and soaking the trays and allowing to completely drain 2x a day will be the trick! Thank you again for you help, you are very helpful!

Good Morning!!!! Day 4 and still looking good. Just starting to get the green shoots. They look damp so I'm not going to water? Or should I? ? I went back and read again. The word watering for 30 minutes?? Does that mean that you rinse the tray's everyday for that amount of time. Then wait 10 hours??? I wish I had hands on training!!!!!!! What I sometimes read is not what I understand?? Book smart I'm not. Well off to hang some clothes on the line and then feed the Funny Farm! Friday is going to be busy. But Saturday is too. I finally get a trailer for the round bale of hay!!!! No more pushing that roll off the truck and having to lower the ring around it. Everyone have a great day!!!! Mare

Just make sure when you water them twice a day you thoroughly water them, do it again in 12 hours. It's all gonna get easier! Wash the trays out real good after your fodders done. Book smart isn't always best! Have a great weekend Mare and keep on Fodderin!

I have 8 trays going and the oldest is 10 days old toady. It is barley and has about 2" of growth but again it is not consistent. Half the tray is 2" while the rest is barley sprouting- however it weighs 6.5 lbs already and I started with 2 lbs of seed. The other older tray is wheat and probably a consistent .5" of growth but the growth is not green, it actually looks a little brown.. Is that normal? Should I just feed it out before sit gets to old or let it go a little longer? Some of the other trays (that I have kept inside and followed your suggestions) are starting to sprout consistent growth! They are taking a little longer then the recommended 6 days but they are coming along. Is it possible they need longer then 6 days to sprout to full potential?
Being optimistic and hoping for the best!

On a positive note.. Here is a couple picture of my barley.. Day 8 and showing a beautiful root mat, no mold and about 1.5" sprouts. Good consistent growth.. I'm hoping for at least 4" before I feed out.. Am I waiting too long or is waiting for the 4" growth ok?? Joann
