Fodder Fan
Without pictures I can say water less and make sure they are well drained. Fodder will have some whiteish hairs this is ok but black and pink mold feed it to the animals before it sets in. Also barley and black oil sunflower seeds seem to be less trouble for mold with wheat being the hardest to grow without mold. Keep the area the fodder is growing in at temps ranging 65-80 with a fan for circulation. I water mine twice a day for thirty minutes the water goes in the top of the tray and straight out the bottom. So if its trickling out the bottom.....needs more drainage. Hope this helps!

Finally got a few sprouting in a tray after multiple failed trays prior to auto waterer but noticed white mold...think it was due to setting up the waterung system snd tweeking it to water properly....think getting too much water but i set my timer down like i read in a post you told others to do...trying to find happy medium of not to dry but not to wet...wish i could get something to feed them instead of ask the waste. ..

Hi all. I just started my little mini fodder system and I too, of course, have a mold issue (barley). Sigh. It is the white stuff and in some areas pink. I don't know if my water drains TOO fast and then not enough? Not sure. My system is the zig zag, tilted up slightly on one side, deal. I have it in my laundry room which is in the house. I put a small fan in there to help with air circulation and leave the window open when I'm home. I have the house usually between 72-75*, but it's colder in the laundry room (I don't have a thermometer in there yet.) I water 3 times a day, but today cut it down to 2 times. Today is the end of day 5 on my oldest tray, but I have mold showing up in my day 4 and 3 as well. The others all look good so far. Fingers crossed. I've started presoaking with ACV so I hope that works... But we'll see... I'm just not sure what this type of mold is from and what else I can do. I've read lots on the black mold in the roots, but not this. Also, I presoak for about 12-16 hours. I've now added the ACV to the presoak and have not had mold in those trays yet, but they're still fairly new. We'll see in a few days. Also I watered my moldy trays separately and with baking soda solution that I read about somewhere to help prevent further growth. :/ When I lay my soaked seeds down in the tray they're only about a 1/2in deep at most. I'll attempt to attach some pictures here in a moment. Ok so here is my mold issue in my Day 5 tray. And other pictures are my set up (from when i first started last week). Right now I'm just feeding this to my few chickens that I have (it's ok to feed this to them still, right??), but I'd like to get this figured out, because I eventually want to add meat rabbits and have part of their diet on fodder. Thanks all for the help.

Have you tried a different seed source? I used to get the pink mold on my wheat which is why I switched to barley. Twice a day watering sounds good and you want the water to drain fast so that good as well. I would try a different seed source first buy small samples of other grain to try see if that helps. Also try cutting your soak time in half before switching grains. I feed my chickens this and they did fine.

Hi! I'm new here. I'm glad I finally found this page! I am sprouting oats. Its really hit or miss for mold. Today I'm moving them into the basement, and soaking them in bleach solution. I'm also running all of my trays through the dishwasher. I'm only growing this for 6 chickens. SUPER small scale. But seriously this has been the most complicated "formula". Here are a few questions.... Where is barley grown? I'll be driving to Texas & Montana from WY this summer. What is the ideal soak time for oats? What is the ideal temp for oats to sprout? How much light do they need? In the basement it stays cooler, but there isn't much natural light... is an overhead light enough? Also, do I want the seeds to completely dry out between waterings?
Okay, that was a more than a "few" questions...
Thanks so much for your help!!

I only soak oats about an hour as they seem to give me the most issue i know mix them with other grains to sprout such as wheat, and black oil sun flower seeds etc... works way better this way. I have sprouted in total darkness but a regular light will do. I like to keep the temperature between 65-80 and I do not let them completely dry out between watering. If you are looking for barley put an ad on craigslist or search our seed source section.

Hi Sprouts! I will try soaking for an hour today. If I were to mix seeds, would I mix them up after I soaked them for their different & individual times? For example, I'd soak my wheat by itself, the sun flower by itself, and the oats by themselves. Then, I would mix them all together & start day 1 of growing my fodder?
For now, since I'm not mixing them... how often would you water oats? every 12 hrs, or is that too much?
I will check out the seed sources and hopefully get some barley.... but I'd love to get these oats to work too! Thanks again!

You are correct on the soak times, with watering Id start with every 12 hour watering for 15-30 minutes then adjust time as needed. If they get bone dry between then adjust to watering every 8 and so on. Any tractor supply place or place that sells bird seed will have BOSS black oil sunflower seeds you'll love their germination rate and highly nutritious. Ive also sprouted pinto beans hahah

I am having the exact problems as Mare from Florida. I live in Louisiana. I have to order the seeds online and the shipping is very expensive. I'm throwing away 5 lbs of seeds that have all molded. I watched tons of videos on how to do the fodder system. I water once in the morning and once at night as all the videos recommend. I soaked the seeds for 24 hours with bleach overnight. If I use apple cider vinegar, what is the ratio of water to vinegar? My a/c is set at 75. I am going to get some small fans but I do have ceiling fans running. All the videos say don't let your seeds dry completely. Mine are sitting in a window so that it gets lots of light. By day three they were beginning to smell sour and many of the seeds did not sprout further than the small white sprout that happens on the first day in the sun. Please help.
