Welcome oldgraymare Your in good hands here. I'm still new at this but, Ada is a good teacher she's helped me a lot!!!! I'm trying to grow wheat. Barley is hard for me to get at a good price. Because of the post office prices they charge for delivery. She also has a great green tray that did a great different in growing the seed she sent me. Next week I plan to try the wheat in it. Everyone have a great evening!!!!! Mare

Hi oldgraymare welcome to the Fodder Forum! I grow mine with a tray on top of the seeded tray for the fist two-three days this helps the root mat develop better try one that way and one in sun youll see the difference yourself. I always mix my seeds like half barley half oats, or corn with barley and black oil sunflower seeds etc

My oats are about 3 inches! One thing I noticed is some of the seeds are getting darker. Almost black. No fuzz or funny smell on them. The sprout on the dark seeds look good. I lifted the mat and the roots are all nice and white. Mat is about 1/2 inch thick. Is this something I should worry about?

Just keep an eye on it and at the first sign of mold feed it out.

1st feeding day this morning was a semi success! Ducks and peacocks were leary but they did pick at it. Goats wanted nothing to do with it. But they are totally spoiled and very picky! I gave a very small hunk to both the mini's and they loved it! I need to do some research on horses and laminitis. My little mare is on only hay all year..no pasture at all. She has chronic laminitis whenever she eats grass. Its been many years since she has been out in the pasture. She does great on hay only. Thanks for all the tips and help! This is fun! And hopefully it will start saving me some money soon!

Hello oldgraymare, Try adding a little of the grain they where eating before you tried the fodder. That's what I did for my cows and after that they had no trouble. Mare

That worked Mare! I gave them some tonight and put their feed on top. When I went back in with hay it was gone!! I have 2 girls.. both blind.. rescue goats. 3 yr old is a fainting goat and the 1 yr old is a nigerian dwarf. The lady I got them from is really sick and couldnt take care of them anymore. They are real sweeties and she spoiled them! I spoil all my critters so they came to a good place! I have had them for about 3 months and they are doing great. Finding their way around pretty good. I started using a clicker and that works great when I want them to come back to the barn. So Thanks for the advice.. Hopefully they will continue to like it!

Well now thats its starting to get warm finally here I am starting to have a few mold issues. Just a bit of fuzzy stuff. I have a fan in the room to try to keep the humidity down. I can only get it down to 60% though. I added more holes on the sides of the pans to see if that will help. Any other ideas??

Heres kind of a weird observation too.. I didnt start getting mold problems until I started putting rye in the mix. Does that mold easier you think? I might go back to just barley and oats and test that out!
