Welcome peaceeagle, Hope your fodder is going good. I use wheat and yes it's a hard seed to sprout. I live in Florida and I had a lot of start and stop with it. I added a fan to my room and I water only twice a day. Your in good hands with Ada. She helped me a lot and stuck by me till I got the hang of it. I'm still working on my wheat and have had good out come on small trails. Once I get good I'll do more then one tray at a time. Hello Ada, How are you? Things here are going good. Our garden is starting to come up and setting blooms on all the plants. I had no lucky on selling my cows on craigs list. So I tried the Auction. I'll never go there again. It was bad enough that I had to let 2 of my cows go. I had a very sad day that day. But I'm ok now. I still have Stormy to grow out for the butcher and Sara-lu will drop a calf in 4 weeks. And she was the one I wanted to let go first. And I'll have her for 10 month more. After she drops. I wean the calf that late. I've had very health calf that way. After that I'll have all my large animals gone and going to smaller breed.(Dexters)Plus they are dual cows. So I'll have a new adventure with the milking. Even though I milked my beef cow. I order the nesting box for my chickens today too. I plan to finish their coop this week. I started that a couple of month ago, but life got in the way and I had to drop that for awhile. I'll send a pic to ya when I get done with it. By then also the new chicks will be ready to join the coop too. Well Hope everybody is having a great day!!!!! Catch ya later!!!!!! Mare

Thanks Mare. At the moment my system is idle as I am going on a trip to Kansas in a few days ( I live in PA ). I plan on looking for a source of different grains when I get home and start it all up again. I don't think the wheat I got was very good quality as it was dirty and I didn't get a very good sprout rate. And I grew greaqt mold! I have picked up lots of good hints here that I'm going to try out. I'm sure with experimentation I'm going to have a lot more questions. My chickens loved what I did put out. I think thy liked the fermented grain best, but most of them are free ranging right now. Two of my rabbits took right to it. My parrots were ; eh, this is different, something to be leery of, maybe I'll just tear it apart now and scatter it all over the room. But that's parrots for you!

I am also having trouble with a sour smell and the roots do not make a tight mat. I bought barley seeds with my system and they worked great. It was cooler then. Locally I can only get wheat and oats. Oats are a disaster and do not sprout. Wheat sprouts well but some seeds on the bottom sour. I have been soaking for 8 hours and water for 1/2 hour every 5 hours. The building it is in gets hot. I soak in hydrogen peroxide. Mold is not a problem. I'm on well water any help will be appreciated.

Andrea,
Try reducing your watering time to half hour every eight hours. Grains will have a fermented smell this is normal as the grain is starchy so, you may need to change your systems water every 2-3 days. Give that a try and keep us posted!

Hi. Took a break from my attempts and my ongoing battle with mold. Scrubbed and bleached all my equipment and moved to a different room. New room has less dust and temp/humidity control. Just fed my 1st new batch, wheat, today. I also have barley and oats growing.I have been using fresh water ( 2x/day/6 gal H2O )instead of recirculating from a tank. NO MOLD!! Wheat seems to grow great for me - thick roots and grass. Oats and barley, not so much. Sparse roots and grass. Any suggestions? I soak the oats 1/2 to 1 hr, rinse, let set in a bucket 12 hr, rinse, set another 8 - 12 then put in a tray. Barley I soak 8 hr, then same routine. Do you think letting them sit in a bucket with rinses for longer then 24 hr will help? When I put the wheat in a tray , it already has pips starting and roots / sprouts take off .

Hi I have completed my trial run and am looking for inexpensive trays that will hold at least 5 pounds of barley (dry weight). Can anyone recommend a source? I am feeding 6 draft horses, 3 Standardbred horses and about 75 chickens.

Thank you for the link. Do you know anything about the 21.65" W x 47.24" L x 1.57" H trays? (http://store-ax5m4.mybigcommerce.com/fodder-feed-system-tray/) I am wondering how many pounds of dry barley seeds will fit in them and also a question for anyone that has used them - are they hard to handle?

They can hold 6 three quart scoops(feed scoop) full of grain and grow adequately. I have several and use but I wouldnt go any bigger as they get heavy once they are at day 6 growth.

We will try to answer any questions within 24 hours! We are feeding fodder to our dairy goats but the milk now has a much stronger taste. Is this normal?

With any change in diet you will notice a change in the taste of the milk. How long have they been eating fodder?

Hello! My problem: Flies (not fruit, but the black house flies) get into my fodder and lay eggs in it. How do I overcome this? I have tried fodder several times and each time had to toss it. I have tried outside, inside etc. but these pests always seem to find & infiltrate my efforts! Thanks!
