Global Fodder Solutions fodder is high in digestible fibre, which is digested into volatile fatty acids that support intestinal flora and are readily absorbed into the bloodstream as a source of energy. This makes it an ideal post race feed as it is cool, full of moisture and anti-oxidants, and readily eaten by horses even after exertion. GFS fodder is also a significant source of Chlorophylls, mixed Carotenoids, Antioxidants, Folic Acid and Omega-3 fatty acids. It also includes clean nutritious root mass and softened seeds for maximum nutritional benefit, reduces dehydration, and reduces the amount of hay and chaff needed. Barley grass can be organically grown and it harvested in seven days when it contains the maximum nutrient value. Barley grass is considered to be one of the most nutritional of the green grasses, containing abundance or nutrients unsurpassed by other green grass types. The benefits of fresh green feed such as barley grass have been well documented over many years. Barley grass has been shown to increase the overall health and performance of the animal through better digestion and nutrient absorption. Animals fed with barley grass will experience: •An increased immune system •Greater energy •Anti-inflammatory benefits •Antioxidant protection •Neutralization or pesticide toxins. Independent research studies have been conducted be qualified academic institutes that prove the value of using barley grass. These studies show that barley grass is both beneficial to livestock and cost effective as a substitute for the traditional fodder supplements. Recent testing by Symbio Laboratories, (a NATA accredited testing laboratory), confirms that Global Fodder Solutions fodder, produced from Barley grain base, exhibits levels for moulds and yeasts 97-98% below those allowed for human food consumption. The same testing regime identified nil presence of any harmful bacteria. In another independent testing program undertaken by Symbio Laboratories our fodder grass was submitted to exhaustive analysis for any traces of approximately 57 known toxic chemicals, pesticides, and insecticides. Results released in January 2009 confirm NDL (no detectable levels) for any toxic chemical. These last results are particularly impressive because we believe that Global Fodder Solutions now has the only technology that can be used in machines and factories to produce Fodder Biomass, without the use of any chlorine, and without the use of any chlorine based disinfectants. Such chemicals are widely applied in heavy doses in all other hydroponic systems which are used to grow animal foods and many which grow human foods. Without their continual use crops fail due to high levels of mould and yeast contamination. As we also use our systems to grow foods for humans we are acutely aware of the possibility of introduction of toxic chemicals into the human food chain, accidentally or otherwise, and what the ramifications can be. For this reason we totally ban the use of chlorine-based or toxic chemicals in our machines and processes. We believe we may be the only company, in the business of manufacture of machines and factories for supply of freshly grown animal fodder, who can make the claims above which are proven and validated by independent testing laboratories.
Nutritive of GFS animal fodder: The table below shows the feed quality characteristics of fodder produced in GFS fodder machines and GFS Biomass Factories. In order to gain a true perspective we have compared the nutritional values for the three items below all of which were grown at the same time and under identical conditions in a GFS Fodder Machine: •Dry Barley grain •The same dry Barley grain grown and harvested at 7 days •GFS barley based fodder grown and harvested at 7 days A comparison between dry Barley grain, the same grain grown in 7 days, and Global Fodder Solutions Barley fodder grown in 7 days.
These are certified analysis results conducted on samples grown in the same GFS Fodder machine at the same time. We have compared the mineral content values for the same items used for the previous feed quality characteristics chart and for the purposes of true comparison all values shown are converted to a %w/w Dry Weight Basis (DWB). A comparison between Barley grain grown in 7 days and Global Fodder Solutions Barley fodder grown in 7 days.

Note that Selenium is not present in the young Barley grass plants the reason being that it is more economical to provide selenium intake by other means in formulated animal diets. GFS Fodder Applications Feeding dairy cows and cattle with GFS fodder: The high concentrations of soluble sugars and starches, combined with relatively low ADF and NDF values, mean that GFS Fodder is high quality forage for both dairy cows and cattle. It will ferment rapidly in the rumen of dairy cows, providing rapid energy for lactation and growth. The crude protein content at 29.49% is in the top of the range for high producing ruminant animals. GFS Fodder contains a wide range of minerals required by dairy cows and horses in good concentrations levels. Sodium and calcium, which are normally found to be deficient in fodder grown from Barley grain are present at usable levels in GFS Barley base fodder. As has been mentioned selenium is not present in usable levels and is usually supplied from other sources if GFS fodder is fed as part of a mixed diet. Feeding of horses with GFS fodder: Oxidative Stress – Horses in work are subject to oxidation from free radicals as a result of their exertion. It is widely accepted that the best natural counter to oxidative stress are the anti-oxidants contained in fresh leafy plants. GFS fodder is an ideal fresh leafy plant food, full of antioxidants, which can be used to feed horses in work . Anti-Ulcer Treatment- Gastric ulceration in horses is a problem. Research has shown that when on feed concentrates a horse’s stomach often begins to ulcerate quickly. Many ulcer-treating drugs are detected by swabbing, so they must be discontinued several days before a race. If ulcer treatment is stopped, the ulcers can recur by race day and inhibit the horses’ performance. Young sprouted grasses contain a much higher concentration of active principles than the mature plants and young barley grass in particular is acknowledged to have anti-ulcer and anti-inflammatory properties. To use GFS fodder as a therapeutic supplement for racehorses 5 to 10kg per day fed over a 10-week period prevents ulcers in the horse and can fully replace ulcer-treating drugs which may have detrimental side effects. Horses are first attracted by the lush tender barley grass leaves and then grow to love the dense nutritious root mat. The root mat requires major chewing, during which large amounts of buffering saliva is taken down onto the stomach, aiding the ulcer prevention benefits. We can supply individual seed types e.g. Barley as well as our ‘designer’ blends which have been carefully analysed by our animal nutritionist to provide animals with the best possible nutrition for their application. For example we can provide blends for each different species of animals (e.g. goats, cattle, horses, camels etc) as well as blends for different applications (e.g. dairy, fattening, breeding, racing, pregnancy etc). This allows clients to get the best results from our products and improves the efficiency of their farming operation. If there are any particular nutritional concerns we can consult our animal nutritionist to provide the best feed solution. For example the protein content in sprouted Barley grain shown in the ’Nutritive value of GFS fodder’ chart above is 15.76% but in our naturally engineered GFS Barley base fodder we have been able to elevate protein levels to 29.49%. We have been able to do similar for calcium, normally found to be at deficient levels in sprouted barley, and have increased the levels of calcium from 1,982mg/Kg up to 4,070mg/Kg. Cost Comparison of Barley Fodder and Barley grain When calculating the cost of a feeding program, it is important to cost the feed in terms of units of energy provided. Energy is needed by animals for all body functions. Energy is measured in megajoules (MJ). Animal requirements are assessed as megajoules of metabolisable energy (MJ/ME). Energy in feed is assessed as megajoules of metabolisable energy per kilogram of dry matter (MJ/ME/kg feed dry matter or simply M/D). (NSW DPI, ‘Prime Facts 339′, January 2007′). Below is a cost comparison of maintaining the weight of a 350kg steer using Barley Fodder compared to Barley feed grain. Calculations are using the following average figures: 350kg 12-18month old steer will require approximately 40Mj/ME each day. (VIC DPI, ‘Feeding options for beef cattle’ October 2002) Barley Fodder: (grown from untreated seed grain) •17% Dry Matter (DM) •11.8 megajoules of metabolisable energy per kg dry matter (ME/DM) •Cost per Kg of grain= $0.55 Barley Feed Grain: •88.1% Dry Matter (DM) •13 megajoules of metabolisable energy per kg dry matter (ME/DM) •Cost per Kg = $0.40 * Note: Above grain and fodder values are taken from independent lab test samples of GFS grain and fodder. Barley Fodder Barley Grain
Steer requires 40ME/MD per day: 40 / 11.8 (ME/DM for barley fodder) =3.39 (Kg of DM needed to meet ME requirements) As barley fodder DM value is 17% of total fodder weight we need to find the total amount of fodder that is to be grown in order to produce 3.39kg DM.This is done by the following equation: 3.39 / 0.17 = 19.94 (kg of fodder required) To make this easier to understand we can look at it another way. If we grow 19.94kg of fodder, 17% of this fodder will be DM. Therefore 19.94kg X 0.17 = 3.39Kg DM To grow 19.94kg of fodder we require 2.22kg of grain. Certified barley grain cost = $0.55/kg 2.22kg X $0.55 = $1.22 Feed Wastage = nil Therefore using Barley fodder it will cost you $1.22 per day to feed the 350kg steer. *We suggest you include 30% low quality roughage and 10% grain or other protein supplementation for best results. Steer Requires 40ME/DM per day: 40 / 13 (ME/DM for Barley grain) = 3.08 (Kg of DM needed to meet ME requirements) As Barley grain DM value is 88.1% of total grain weight, we need to find out the total amount of grain we need to feed in order to give us 3.08kg DM. This is done with the following equation: 3.08 / 0.881 =3.50 (total kg of grain required) To make this easier to understand we can look at it another way. If we feed a total of 3.5kg of grain, 88.1% of this will be DM. Therefore 3.5 X 0.88.1 = 3.08kg DM Therefore the cost of 3.50kg of barley grain at $0.40/kg I.e. 3.50kg X $0.40 = $1.40Feed wastage = 20% (undigested grain) Therefore you will be required to feed an extra 20% in order for the animal to digest 100% this will increase all values including the total cost by 20%. ($1.40 X 1.20 = $1.68) Therefore using Barley feed grain it will cost you $1.68 per day to feed the 350kg steer. *A standard grain diet should include 30% good quality roughage such as lucerne and 10% protein supplement
Therefore in the above cost comparison by feeding stock GFS Barley Fodder instead of Barley feed grain you will save on average $0.46 per head per day. That works out to be a saving of $167.90 per head over a period of 12 months. This has not taken into account the cost of additional dietary supplements necessary in each diet, the cost for which will be greater in the grain diet due to protein supplement and higher quality roughage which are required.
