I am working on building a small fodder growing system, about 5-10 1020 trays. I have a water pump and a timer to automate the daily watering needed. The water is in a container at the 'bottom' of the system, twice a day it pumps water to the top tray and then it filters through the remaining trays back down to the bottom container.
My question is - is there something I can add to the water to increase the usable time for the water to keep it from getting gunky/dirty/smelly? I'd like to stay organic, the fodder is fed to chickens and their eggs are sold as organic eggs at our farmers market.
Thank you!!

You could try apple cider vinegar or changing the water a couple times a week but a fermented smell is normal, not pleasant but normal haha

So firstly, pushing the same water from one tray to the next is a strict no-no for me. Also if you can go for the drain to waste approach, it should work better. Also you need to ensure that your trays drain properly. I am using a flood and drain approach where the seeds are kept on a slightly elevated perforated section so they completely dry out. Also you should try and control your environment. You can check out pacapride blog for more pointers. Those guys are doing really good work on hydroponic fodder for DIY guys.
