I'm using a 4 tray fodder system, soon to be 6 tray, with a pump that cycles water to the top of each tray which then drains back into the water reservoir. After a few cycles this way the water starts to foam or get bubbles on the top. Any way to stop this from happening? It seems I'm starting to change water more frequently which I have noticed is starting to really effect my water bill.

The bubbles are normal and won't effect/hurt anything. I wouldnt worry about it and I only change mine every 2-4 days and it has the bubbles as well just part of the normal process. Hope this helps!

Heres a few tips for city water. Tap water can contain chemicals such as chlorine which can adversely affect your plants. If unsure it is best to let your tap water stand for 24 hours prior to adding to your reservoir by letting your water stand, you equalize the the temperature of the water to that of the room, thereby making the water less likely to shock the plants' root system. Chlorine will not kill your plants it can actually help them resist mold and mildew build up at the stock base. However most city's water that contain chlorine also contain bromine this will kill your plants, the best way to get rid of this bromine is to fill a container (not your reservoir) with cold water the next day you will notice that the walls of the container will have little bubbles sticking allover, just tap your cintainer sides a few times until all of these bubbles float up to the top. this trick is called perking and is a very affective way to exspell bromine its also a lot cheaper than using aquarium tablet.

On day 5 of growth, my fodder is getting a foul smell and I see white slimy stuff. Is this mold or normal for this stage of growth?
Also, my root mat is not white like I've seen in several pics. Does this have any significance?

Fodder has a fermented smell so that is normal. What type of seed are you germinating? Can you post some pictures? I need some information on how often you are watering, temperature of where your foddering, light they are receiving. Do you have well water? This all will give me a better idea on how to help.

ok a few things. When I first sprout I buy small amounts because all seeds are not created equal! Barley from one place may not sprout as well as barley from another place and when you get a good one stick with them. I also try different types for example wheat, spelt etc.
Try cutting back on watering, also a fan for air circulation. If you are sprouting in trays add more holes for more air circulation. I also let my water sit all night before I put it in the reservior so it doesnt shock the roots.
Another way to get better root growth is to place a tray over your tray that has seeds in it for the first 2-3 days being in the dark gives better root growth then remove the lid and let them have light for the next 3-4 days.
Nutrients can be added to aide in root growth but I would try the other things first they will help a lot.

But I think a good place to start is more holes for better drainage!

I received my order of 50 trays. The description says "no holes" and I wanted that so I can control the amount of water and the direction I want it to drain. These trays came with "slots"! So, the water will immediately drain off, or now, I have to find a container to put the trays in. Won't my seeds just wash through these slots in the trays?
